Kine Each week told you “The new powerful ‘crooks slip out’ is actually peopled that have a colourful range out-of important and you can arresting letters, and these, skilfully manipulated because of the blogger and you can director, allow the film to help you tread drinking water effortlessly. It is only toward end so it actually starts to fall apart, nevertheless smack-upwards finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you may smartly dialogued, it’ll have no high challenge in life down its very unsightly label.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin said “The film moves at the a fast speed, the fresh discussion are smooth and you may characterisations essentially energetic. The fresh film’s journalist and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up a multidimensional chess game, for mortal bet, between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) has worked within local casino and you may old a beneficial corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic software, brand new cast’s suavely controlled body language of love and you may threat, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you can stylishly assertive pictures (plus his political conscience) make this pugnacious yet , intricate spectacle an invisible antique of the genre.” [ 10 ]

Pic has activity and you will anticipation, and specific brief touches regarding jokes to provide style. Ace performances by the Dick Powell, as a gaming home overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, as an authorities inspector, also within the score . Although the area comes after a common pattern, new characterizations was fresh and shows adequate so you’re able to overbalance. Dialogue try terse and you can topical, steering clear of the psychological, phoney touching. Strange camera basics come along occasionally to intensify desire and you may briefly stop the attention. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing as the director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, new creator and you may user manufacturer, along with helps with making this a softer manufacturing.” [ 11 ]

It is primarily a question of enjoying Mr. Powell experience their paces smartly while you are a large throw out-of stars and you can performers render your customary help. Evelyn Keyes performs the good nothing lady exactly who brings out this new best in him and Ellen Received is the smooth and you will slinky vixen just who will get him to the jams. Thomas Gomez try oily just like the villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a separate in a position concert tour just like the an exhausted cops inspector exactly who eventually shuts the actual situation. Significant amounts of taking and puffing is accomplished from the all worried.” [ several ]
